Green Crabs Are Decimating Coastal Ecosystems and Shellfish Industries

The European green crab is considered one of the most invasive species across the United State’s coastal ecosystems. The green crab lacks natural predators, aggressively hunts its prey, destroys seagrass, and outcompetes local species for food and habitat. Green crab populations are exploding and overtaking salt marshes, seagrass meadows, and other rocky intertidal ecosystems that support multimillion-dollar shellfish industries. And climate change has the potential to make green crab invasions even worse.

This episode of “The Sweaty Penguin” explores problems caused by increasing green crab populations and a variety of solutions that could help get their populations under control. Featuring special guest Dr. Alyssa Novak, Research Assistant Professor of Earth & Environment at Boston University.
